BSc, University of British Columbia

I am in the final year of my Masters under the main supervision of Prof. Janette Bulkan and the co-supervisions of Prof. Terry Sunderland and Prof. Suwichan Phattanapraiwan. The current title of my project is “Assessing the resilience of a Pga’knyaw/Karen community forest in using rotational farming as a form of forest management: a case study of Ban Klang, Lampang, Thailand”. My interest in Indigenous community forest governance stemmed from my Karen heritage and upbringing in Northwest Thailand. That, combined with a B.Sc in Natural Resource Conservation from UBC, shaped the direction of my thesis. The final aim is to apply concepts from a socio-ecological systems framework to better understand the progression of Indigenous community rights in 1) governing their customary land and 2) maintaining their forest-based livelihoods. Throughout my thesis work I have also been a teaching assistant for Prof. Bulkan’s undergraduate courses of Community Forestry and Aboriginal Forestry.
